From humble beginnings over 90 years ago, Auckland Airport has evolved into a major transportation hub. Serving the country's largest city, it can be considered the gateway to New Zealand as in excess of three-quarters of all international visitors pass through it. More than three times busier than New Zealand's second busiest airport, Christchurch, the North Island hub handled 20.5m passengers on 174,000-plus scheduled flights in the year to June 2018.
