The Tornado has been the 'go-to' aircraft when the Italian government joins forces with other nations to project military power. Since entering service with Aeronautica Militare (AM - Italian Air Force) in the early 1980s, the multi-role jet has seen action over the Balkans. Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan. The first Tornado for Italy was delivered on May 17. 1981 to the RSV (Reparto Sperimentale di Volo, which develops and tests aircraft) at Pratica di Mare, near Rome. The initial aircraft assigned to an operational wing arrived on August 27 1982 at Ghedi Air Base for 6C Stormo. The AM went on to receive 99 Interdiction Strike (IDS) Tornados, equipping 154" and 102° Gruppo of 6° Stormo, and 156° Gruppo of 36° Stormo at Gioia del Colle.The 156° Gruppo (squadron) aircraft carried out Tactical Air Support to Maritime Operations (TASMO) armed with the AS.34 Kormoran air-to-surface missile.
