Former Tornado GR4 unit IX(B) Sqn officially re-formed on the Typhoon at RAF Lossiemouth on April 1. As well as air defence and QRA duties, it will also perform the 'red air' or 'aggressor' role providing opposition for UK and allied air forces. Control of the Army Air Corps aerial surveillance Britten-Norman BN2T Islander AL1s and BN2T-4S Defender AL2s and T3s passed to the RAF on April 1.The operating unit, 651 Sqn, has been assigned to 1 Group which is responsible for the RAF's fast jets, but also its intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) forces.
