A masterly account of the origins and development of the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), as it built an enviable reputation and became a worldwide symbol of Britishness. The text is illustrated with 263 black and white, 66 colour photographs and 88 examples of advertising material. The story starts with its predecessors, Imperial Airways and the original British Airways, both of which it took over by parliamentary decree in April 1940. A chapter entitled 'The War Years' covers Liberator transatlantic operations, flying boat services to Australia via Africa, DC-3s to Lisbon and landplane services in Asia, to name just a few of BOAC's varied responsibilities.
