It’s not uncommon for firefighters to think that how they use ladders on the fireground is how they should use ladders in the fire station. Sadly, this is not true. As you read above, you noticed that there are many requirements for the safe use of ladders that do not apply to the fire ground. Does getting a cat out of a tree constitute an emergency, which means many of the safety rules can be tossed away? Probably not. If a firefighter falls off of a ladder trying to get a cat out of a tree, OSHA will probably be asking some questions. If we can teach our firefighters how to use a ladder safely in the fire station, then hopefully those skills will carry over to the fire ground. And they just might even carry over to how the firefighter uses a ladder at home… …especially when picking apples!
