The television production world got away from trailing cables, which were never an issue for film cameramen, by inventing the camcorder. Now, radio cameras are coming into their own for use in sports and outdoor corporate events. The initial use of radio cameras in the late 1970s revolutionised the coverage of sport, providing true camera mobility for the first time, and allowing the viewers to get closer to the action than ever before. However, the early FM modulation based analogue wireless cameras were highly susceptible to multi-path interference, caused by obstacles and reflectors between the transmitter and the receiver, leading to picture breakup. Analogue cameras also suffered badly from chroma 'breathing' where the colour saturation would fluctuate as a result of multipath and modulation problems. This effectively limited the use of the first generation analogue radio cameras to out-door events where a clear line of sight could be established to maintain signal transmission - but even then picture quality could never be guaranteed. The limitations of the analogue system was compounded by having to work with PAL 625 as it just wasn't feasible to work with SDI or component signals.
