The Royal Albert Hall's iconic auditorium was filled with a different type of energy last time I visited. My tour coincided with a week of refur-bishments, which take place every April and September, so instead of being surrounded by an eager audience I was accompanied by 500 contractors carrying out maintenance. "We're working on so many technical and aesthetic projects at the moment but refurbishment is an ongoing process inside and outside." says Oliver Jeffery, the Royal Albert Hall's head of technical and production, as we sit in the new box seats, gazing out at the monumental space. "The 50 or more projects include internal restoration schemes, replacing existing seats and looking at how to better handle the 140 motors in the roof."
