Thirty million motorists in the UK spent £10.5bn (excluding VAT) in the past 12 months on servicing and maintaining their cars. What's more, 26 million MOT tests are conducted each year and a recent Trend Tracker report showed franchised dealers have not been successful in taking market share for MOT and servicing - just 18% of the market sits with franchised dealers, while independents take 70% and fast fits take 5%. Historically, workshops in the franchised sector relied on the up-to-four-year car pare for service and repair business. As the four-year car pare declined, franchised workshops were hit with a similar decline in volume. UK motorists' vehicles are now 7.25 years old on average and this has resulted in an overall increased annual spend on servicing and repair work to maintain their existing car.
