EPA Proposes New Tier 3 Emissions Standards Effective 2017

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed new Tier 3 tailpipe and fuel standards designed to reduce emissions and the sulfur content in gasoline on March 29. If approved as is, the standards would go into effect in 2017. Designed to be in line with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) s Low Emission Vehicle Ⅲ program, the EPA estimates the proposed standards would raise the cost per vehicle by $130 by 2025 and the average cost of one gallon of gasoline by 1 cent. The amount of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides would be lowered by 80 percent, the particulate matter standard would be tightened by 70 percent, fuel vapor emissions would be reduced to close to zero, and vehicle emissions of toxic air pollutants, such as benzene and 1,3-butadiene, would be reduced by up to 40 percent.
