Axial thrust washers are an important component of automatic transmissions. Because they separate the different gear stages from one another, they are subject to high axial forces and extreme tribological loads. The compact design of the housings and higher loads cause higher- oil temperatures. Standard materials such as bronze, DU bearings (a PTFE compound) and nitrided steel washers are unable to meet these demands. Until a few years ago, the only choice was expensive needle bearings. Now, however, VICTREX PEEK, a high performance pol-yaryletherketone, is well established as an alternative material.
