Eric Russell on how the aim of getting rid of large wiring harnesses is still a serious proposition, despite the fact that the much-vaunted CAN bus is uneconomic for many simple functions. At one time, it was expected that the CAN two-wire bus system would completely replace the bulky point-to-point wiring harnesses found on all vehicles. But this has not happened. While CAN is being used for high-level safety-critical control and communication around a vehicle, the standard has proved over-engineered and too expensive for switching simple on-off devices.
