The Ricardo name originated in Holland in the early 18th century, the family, previously called Israel, having moved from Portugal to London via Amsterdam and Italy during the preceding century. Over four generations, Ricardos married English women, quit their ancestral faith, figured in politics and economics, served in senior military positions and became financiers and landowners. At one time their properties included Gatcombe Park, the Princess Royal's Gloucestershire home.
