Whoever has the task, 10 or 20 years from now,-of chronicling what happened to the motor industry in 2000 will find the mergers, affiliations, technical co-operations and closures extremely difficult to unravel. I have set myself a simpler task this month, inspired by rumours drifting out of Peugeot's Ryton plant in Coventry and by Vauxhall making vans jointly with Renault in Luton: looking at French motoring links with Britain.
