Longbridge continues to feature prominently on the huge map of BMW's global manufacturing locations that is in the reception area at Spartanburg, the South Carolina production site for the Z3 Roadster and X5 sports activity vehicle. But the contrast between the bustling US operation and the beleaguered Birmingham factory, jettisoned earlier this year as part of the German company's controversial disposal of its ailing Rover Group, could hardly be more stark.
