Millbrook Proving Ground, the vehicle test and development centre located in the Midlands of Britain, has further increased its capabilities with the opening of a new high-dynamic engine test cell in November. Developed in partnership with AVL UK, it is claimed to be amongst the most sophisticated currently operating anywhere in the world. The high-dynamic 330 KW/700 Nm AVL DynoExact APA cradle-mounted dynamometer takes a step beyond today's most accurate foot-mounted AC dynamometers. By measuring torque directly from the dynamometer instead of from the shaft, it delivers accuracy to within +/-0.3 per cent compared with +/-1.0 per cent for previous generation systems. Combined with AVL's ISAC control system, this allows for more accurate gear shift simulation and consequently much more accurate calibrations can be achieved - it takes just 3 ms for a 100 per cent load change. AVL's test solution is unique in that the automation is a homogeneous system, ensuring all data is acquired in synchrony and can be accessed or visualised via a central user interface. This saves a great deal of time - the data does not need to be synchronised in post-processing, less wiring is needed in the cell and a higher test quality can be achieved, in particular for transient tests. AVL's complete range of emissions test systems means that solutions are provided not only for gaseous emissions - these are configured depending on the application. AVL is also the market leader in particulate measurement equipment, providing solutions for measuring particles and opacity that conform with ECE and US non-road regulations.
