Keeping its options open

Despite losing some ground in Central and Eastern Europe, PSA Peugeot Citroeen has proved that it can keep a strong grip not only in Western Europe, but perhaps in emerging markets too, with clean diesels and clever branding, says Nargess Shahmanesh-Banks. PSA Peugeot Citroeen and Ford of Europe recently announced new developments in their diesel co-operation. Phase four, as it is called, will see a joint investment of ?332m ($396m) in the production of two new 2.2 litre diesel engines. Ford aims to produce 200,000 units a year for its light utility vehicles produced at Dagenham in the UK, while PSA will produce a modified 2.2 litre premium, high output diesel engine for both companies' medium/large and executive models from its Tremery plant in France.
