Located in the most western part of Germany, close to both the Netherlands and Belgium, Aachen is a favoured tourist destination for those who want to immerse themselves in art and culture. Less well known, though, is that it has been one of the drivers of Germany's technological dominance for very many years. Part of this is due to the eminence in which Aachen Technical University is held which has consequently spawned a number of high-grade engineering companies that have come into existence to capitalise on the calibre of the students who graduate each year. William Kimberley visited the historic city to talk to Prof Stefan Pischinger, CEO of FEV Motorentechnik, the very existence of which can be traced back to the university.
