Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah: since the 1920s the spiritual home of the land speed record. Construction machinery maker JCB came here last month to take the FIA world record for diesel cars, set 33 years ago at 235.756 mph by American Virgil W. Snyder in a Thermo King streamliner. The JCB Dieselmax, an elegant yellow projectile powered by a brace of heavily modified JCB 444 engines and piloted by Wing Commander Andy Green, set a new Bonneville record of 317.021mph during Speed Week and followed up by breaking the world record for the measured mile on 22 August with a two way average of 328.767mph. Then in the cool of morning the next day the car tore across the desert again to lift the record to 350.092mph.
