GL set to spearhead DC's attack on US diesel market

The most economical full-size sport utility vehicle in the world is to spearhead an attempt by DaimlerChrysler to capture a big share of a growing market for diesel-powered passenger cars. The German-US giant will launch a compression-ignition version of its new GL model in autumn to coincide with the introduction of diesel fuel with a sulphur content below 15 ppm in the US. "The three-litre V6 in our new family of V-engines combines the torque of a V8 with the fuel consumption of a four-cylinder unit. Making low-sulphur fuel available here finally gives us the opportunity to open a new chapter in the success story of the diesel passenger car," said diesel emission concepts manager Markus Paule.
