Later this year, OEMs will be able to assess the potential of hybrid flywheel kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS). They will be used in Fl from 2009. When the driver hits the brake, the unit stores the energy in a high-speed flywheel. It may take several corners, depending on circuit, to store the 400kJ limit imposed by Fl rules, but then the driver can decide when on the lap to deploy the boost it can deliver.rnFybrid Systems of Silverstone, Northamptonshire, is developing such a system for an unnamed Fl team. Later this year it will dyno-test a KERS adapted for road car applications using a Chevrolet V8.
