Mercedes downsizes its line-up

Daimler is investing €1.4 billion to build four new compact cars. The vehicles will help the OEM enter new Eastern European markets and exploit the move towards greater fuel efficiency.rnThe cars will supplement the Mercedes-Benz A- and B-Class models, made at Rastatt, Germany. The plant will receive 6600 million to expand its capacity. Mercedes will spend the remaining €800 million on building a factory near Budapest.rnDaimler chairman Dr Dieter Zetsche said: "We'll offer a wider range ofrnpremium cars with high levels of comfort, safety and quality in the fuel-efficient compact-car segment."rnThe vehicles will take a modular approach to share components. The firm's latest four-cylinder diesel will be used in the cars.
