FAG has designed a wheel bearing concept that is more durable and easier to mount than radial splines. The bearing will go into production next year in all-wheel drive sedans in the mid and upper classes. "The OEMs recognise the cost and environmental advantages. More and more spur gear teeth will replace conventional radial gear teeth in other vehicles," said FAG. Radial splines normally transmit the drive torque between the wheel bearing and the axle journal. The teeth have a certain amount of clearance to make mounting easier, but the assembly can loosen over time, compromising comfort, creating noise and eventually failing.
