Dual-clutch transmissions help to strike a balance between the convenience of an automatic gearbox and the mechanical efficiency of a manual. They work by passing torque almost instantly from one clutch to the other during gear changes.rnEurope is still the main market for the technology but North America and Japan are moving away from automatic andrncontinuously variable transmissions. But dual-clutch transmissions are not exactly new technology. Porsche put the first such system into prototypes 20 years ago. The costs were too high and the control too complex for it to make it out of development.
