Any engineer working on one of the growing number of eco-models has to be wary of the VW Lupo 3L. As its name suggests, the 1998 car offered fuel economy of 3 litres/100km. Everybody in the industry appreciated its achievement, but very few people wanted to buy it.rnWhen the carmaker introduced its first BlueMotion Polo in 2006, which used the same engine as other models and found more subtle compromises, the response was different. It sold, and the rest of the industry followed suit. Having an eco-version of new models is now a no-brainer.
