VW scales up biomass fuel efforts

Volkswagen is leading a consortium of OEMs and fuel suppliers to push advances in fuels derived from wood and forestry residues. The aim is to develop biofuels that suit its plans for a "Combined Combution System" - its take on homogeneous auto-ignition engines.rnModifying fuels to better suit the engine could be a more effective and less expensive way of reducing CO_2 and pollutants. But "biomass to liquid", which involves the gasification of wood residues at temperatures of 1400℃ before turning the gas into a liquid fuel, is a technology still in its infancy.
