Honda's performance vehicles have been based on high-rewing naturally aspirated engines that make driving fun. The compact Civic Type-R uses a l,998cc gasoline engine which produces its maximum power of 148kW at 7,800rpm and 193Nm of torque at 5,600rpm. But the engine is based on technology that can onlymeet Euro 4 emissions levels. Pressure to reduce emissions means that accelerating to 100km/h in less than seven seconds and ramping up to a top speed of 235km/h is irrelevant - no matter how enjoyable - if it produces 212g/kmof CO2. Engineering the powertrain to meet stricter emissions targets would have been expensive, so Honda has decided to take the Type-R out of production.
