Researchers in the US are developing a mobile phone application designed to reduce driver distraction. The technology uses signals sent via the audio system to determine which side of the car the phone is on. If the app infers that the phone belongs to the driver, it can divert calls to voicemail, tell callers to ring back or even disable outgoing text messages. Associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rutgers University, Marco Gruteser, said: "We're making it easier for people who want to drive less distracted."
