GM's R&D investment subsidiary is investing in advanced high-strength steels featuring nano-scale microstructures. The materials will enable cost- effective weight reduction by combining high-tensile strength and ductility with conventional stamping processes. Bodyshells featuring such materials could help the OEM to meet more stringent safety and fleet average fuel consumption and emissions targets.
