Maserati is one of the most evocative names in the industry but it needs to sell more cars to secure its future. Its V8 sedans, coupes and convertibles look good and sound even better but with CO_2 emissions as high as 337g/km, just making more of these is not the answer, Smaller, more efficient models are needed. The Ghibli is the first. Developed from the architecture of the larger Quattroporte, it's an executive-segment sedan designed to take on benchmark models such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and will be instrumental in Maserati's plan to build 50,000 vehicles by 2015. This is the third time in its history that Maserati has used the name Ghibli but this car includes several firsts for the firm, the most significant being a diesel engine. The 3-litre V6 enables a 250km/h top speed with fuel consumption and emissions of 5.9 litres/100km and 158g/km CO_2. This makes it the first sub-200g/ km Maserati, and also the first with a stop-start system.
