The forthcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class will feature the most advanced, most comfortable seats ever fitted to the luxury sedan. In any form, limousines are a relaxing mode of transport, but now occupants will benefit from what Daimler claims is a world first - a massage function based on the hot stone method, a populartreatment at spas. The technology is intended to relieve stresses and strains. Daimler physiotherapist and psychologist Dr Gudrun Schuenherr, who worked with the seat development team, said: "Sitting in a car in a position imposing sternocostal stresses - with the back arched - often leads to tension in the neck and shoulder area, a constrained chest cavity and therefore less freedom to breathe." The solution is an enhancement of the massage seat used in vehicles such as the currentS-Class. Fourteen solenoid-actuated pneumatic chambers in the seat back provide the massage function. The inflation of each is controlled individually, making the function more effective and making it possible to offer six different programmes.
