When the second-generation Opel-Vauxhall Astra hit the market at the end of the 1980s, the GTE version's digital instrument cluster grabbed people's attention. And it's something that many still remember. Making that kind of impression is becoming more difficult as technologies filter down to the C-segment from above and consumer expectations become ever more difficult to exceed, But engineers working on the Opel-Vauxhall Astra wanted to introduce systems that perhaps the compact class hadn't seen before. This was made easier because the new-generation vehicle is based on a new architecture. "The architecture was developed in Russelsheim, and I'd say that, except for some screws, there's nothing that actually is a carryover from the old Astra," says Marc Schmidt, director of vehicle architectures at Opel-Vauxhall.
