The B-segment is evolving at an incredible pace. More technologies are cascading down from higher-segment vehicles, as consumer demands and legislative targets increase. That evolution has made developing vehicles that will be competitive increasingly challenging, as engineers are having to integrate far more technologies. The Mazda2 has been immensely successful for the OEM, winning numerous awards, and growing the firm's position in the fiercely competitive European market. The Mazda2 is jostling for position against vehicles including the Ford Fiesta, Opel-Vauxhall Corsa and Hyundai i20, as well as more expensive cars such as the Mini. The development project started in 2011, but the concept for the third-generation Mazda2 was planned as early as 2008.
