Audi pulls in real-world data on plug-in powertrains

Audi is putting 40 of its plug-in hybrid Audi A3 e-tron vehicles on the road to test the technology's ability in real-world driving scenarios. The A3 e-tron is already in production, but the OEM is eager to gather data on how the powertrain technology performs on public roads. The 40 vehicles will be used on roads in Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart as part of the German government's year-long Electric Mobility Showcase project. Audi's member of the board for technical development, Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, said: "The first time we were involved in the Electric Mobility Showcase in 2012, we gleaned valuable insights into how purely electric driving copes in everyday operation.
