Four decades ago, Volkswagen produced its first Golf, hesitant as to what the reaction would be. Not only was the vehicle following in the tracks of VW's most successful and now ageing vehicle - the Beetle - but it was the OEM's first series production vehicle since 1952, It was, in almost every respect, the polar opposite to the Beetle, While the original 'people's car' had a soft, rounded body shape, the Golf had sharp, straight lines throughout. Whereas the former was air-cooled, with a rear-wheel-drive configuration and the engine positioned in the rear as well, the young pretender was cooled by water, with a front-wheel-drive set-up and its engine lying underneath the hood at the front.
