We're on the cusp of a revolution. Hybridisation, in all its various forms, is rapidly moving into the mainstream, bringing a whole host of new challenges. One of the biggest issues is integration. Engineers have become pretty adept at getting the best out of the internal combustion engine, and there's also a rapidly growing bank of knowledge of electric machines. But simply optimising each half of the system in isolation isn't enough. The point where these two technologies meet - figuratively and often literally - is the transmission. It can be one of the most complex aspects of integration, where efficiency gains can be amplified or lost.
