Audi has eschewed what by its standards is the smaller-car end of the market for a long time, in favour of the Volkswagen end of the Ingolstadt-Wolfsburg axis. It is a long time since the Audi 50; the Audi 80 started as a relatively small car, if not truly small of course, but it grew steadily and inexorably, particularly after its makers belatedly recognised that buyers even of small-ish cars still carried full size luggage at times, ending up as a car in the next size-class up.
