Perhaps more than any other business that manufactures consumer goods, the motor industry attracts attention when it comes to damaging the environment. Not only are the goods it produces coming under increasing scrutiny from legislators and pressure groups around the world to be safer, emit fewer pollutants and consume less energy, but the factories where cars are produced and the workshops in which they are maintained must also be seen to be environment-friendly. One of the biggest problems facing all manufacturers, but especially those based in North America, is paint. Each year the US auto industry produces nearly 90,000 tonnes of paint sludge, which has to be disposed of.
