In an international industry whose manufacturing centres are so numerous and so scattered, it was inevitable that once CADCAM in all its forms and spin-offs had revolutionised the design and assembly processes of the vehicles, the logistics of manufacture would be next on the efficiency agenda. It is perhaps 10 years since automotive manufacturers started to turn their attention seriously toward the better management of component supply, eagerly seizing and honing the self-evidently sensible principles of just-in-time delivery.
