An estimated 40,000 Americans die in motor vehicle accidents each year. One in every 8.5 drivers is involved in a collision. Safety nowadays is increasingly an issue in the design and development of the motor car. However, it has been part of the research and development of Mercedes-Benz since as early as 1939. The company's Sindelfingen plant in Germany, for instance, had a motto in the 1940s which read: "Safety conscious design down to the smallest detail." Before crash tests where introduced in 1959, early models and safety vehicle prototypes were developed on the basis of data from actual vehicles that had been in accidents.
