Understanding the combustion phenomena occurring inside the combustion chamber of an SI engine is indispensable for reducing exhaust emissions and improving fuel economy. Planar laser measurement techniques are effective in understanding combustion phenomena and ultimately in enhancing engine design and development. This paper presents some of the recent techniques which have been developed to analyze mixing and combustion phenomena in an SI engine.
