Heat transfer fundamentajs applied to chilled water coils

Texts on heat transfer make extensive use of dimensionless numbers, without which calculations of heat transfer would be well nigh impossible. While those dimensionless numbers make mathematical analysis and the laboratory testing and reporting of heat transfer possible, they also tend to mask the effect of changes in any one particular parameter. The same is true of the effect of submerging individual heat transfer coefficients in an overall figure. This paper attempts to dissect those overall concepts in order to explain heat transfer in a chilled water coil in an air-handling unit. It is especially aimed at readers with little formal heat transfer background. It concentrates on heat transfer aspects only and makes little use of psychrometrics.
