Design of air conditioning in operating rooms including laminar air flow

One of the main concerns with operating rooms (operating theatres) is the maintenance of conditions which will contribute to the success of the procedure being carried out and to avoid complications such as infection. While cleanliness and sterility of the instruments, tools, gloves and surfaces can be controlled and assured, the very air surrounding the patient is a major possible source of contamination and infection. It is therefore very important that airflow rate, air distribution, air movement, and air filtration are all designed to minimise likelihood of contamination. Air conditioning systems serving operating theatres should be carefully designed to incorporate these special requirements as well as the usual requirement for control of temperature.
