Numerical simulation of refrigerated display cabinet

The present design of refrigerated display cabinets results in an inefficient use of refrigeration. A significant factor contributing to this is air spillage, which is the loss of cool air from the cabinet, due to the air curtain. This inefficiency manifests in the form of increased cost to the retail industry and discomfort for shoppers. In this paper we describe a numerical model of a display cabinet in order to simulate its fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena which occur in and around such cabinets. A number of modifications of the basic model are also presented so as to develop an understanding of the effects of the various parameters thereby generating design improvements. Particular attention was aimed at reducing the air spillage from the display cabinet.
