The education and training of police within Australia has often been an area of debate and discussion, especially in the context of external enquires and subsequent reforms. From my experience as a former police officer and educator in NSW, I have seen significant changes to the training of police recruits, however, doubts remain as to how ingrained some of these reforms have become in the face of a resistant culture. Like many other training facilities, the NSW Police College promotes the use of adult learning theory but I would argue that in terms of our curriculum writing, assessment and teaching practices, there is a degree of inconsistency and misunderstanding in terms of the theory's application. This is a common problem in many, if not most, police organisations worldwide.
