THE PORT ARTHUR SHOOTING INCIDENT

This article chronicles the events that occurred at Port Arthur on 28 April 1996, and the response to the incident by forensic firearms personnel and other scientific investigators. From a forensic firearm examiner's viewpoint, investigating such crimes poses many problems over and above the ones normally encountered, not the least being the immense workloads investigators are suddenly faced with. In this instance, 35 people died when a lone gunman armed with a .223 calibre Colt AR-15 self-loading rifle and a .308 calibre FN FAL self-loading rifle, calmly started shooting at innocent civilians at the Port Arthur Historic Site in south-east Tasmania, Australia.
