Senior medical staff at the SummitCare aged care facility in Wallsend, a suburb on the outskirts of Newcastle New South Wales (NSW) felt compelled to contact NSW police when three elderly residents in its Mountview ward suddenly fell ill over a two-day period in October 2013. Two of the residents died and the resulting investigation turned out to be an extremely complex, daunting and exhausting task. The workload was immense, particularly given the length and breadth of the investigation and the limited human resources available.
