Clearer direction for fruit evaluation

Quality means different things to grapegrowers, winemakers and consumers. Likewise the consequences of perceived 'quality' are also vastly different for these groups. While the wine industry as a whole has been trying to focus on quality to increase its competitive advantage in the domestic and international markets, the measurement and evaluation of quality has not always been consistent, or transparent, to all parties. A number of the Cooperative Research Centre for Viticulture's (CRCV) projects are dedicated to assessing the use of new technologies in the accurate measurement of quality parameters, including colour and sugar. While the CRCV is making good progress with many of these projects, and is also delivering this information directly to industry through its extension program, two of the CRCV's core participants have also been working to improve consistency in the evaluation of grapes in the field and at the weighbridge.
