Understanding consumer preference is the new fashion in Australian wine research. When I first heard of it, I thought this was a nebulous concept, and that in my opinion there was likely to be such great variation between consumers that it would be difficult to study. The Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (GWRDC) has committed sizeable funds to study this topic in key export markets, with the expectation of finding some 'magic bullet' to increase wine exports. The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) has begun to study the same topic.
