The small line-up of 10 Australian Arneis wines presented to the tasting panel at the Wake Campus of the University of Adelaide in late July initiated some interesting discussion about the distinct styles being made by Australian winemakers. This issue's Varietal Report tasting panel included Dr Sue Bastian from the university, Provisor's Chris Day and Jarred Jenner, and students Andrew Windsor, Tom Kriegshauser and Ben Thoman.rnThe first four wines in the bracket were 2008 vintage wines, which the panel considered were phenolic in character, possibly due to the hot weather in the lead-up to and during vintage in many regions of Australia. Arneis is particularly susceptible to sunburn and requires careful management in the vineyard, even in the cool-climates in which it is grown.
