Ten years ago, I planted 9ac of Merlot on a small plug of volcanic clay soil at the back of our winery in the Hunter Valley. The soil is deep draining and friable with a pH of 5.5 and a limestone sub-soil at about 4m. The soil used to grow lucerne, which is a sign of its ability to produce and we have to keep fertilisation and irrigation to a minimum to maintain vine balance and quality.rnThe vines were planted from cuttings I took from an existing Merlot vineyard, which was in direct contrast to all the professional advice coming out of the industry at the time. I am so thankful that I ignored the advice.
